INDUSTRY SHIFTS
After civil war, people began working at home with few employees in small cramped spaces. Later a law was imposed which restricted manufacturing in residential buildings. This lead Manufacturers to move out of their homes and into commercial loft buildings. In 1920,120 New garment lofts and showrooms buildings were erected north of 35th Street. These building were subjected to new zoning laws which made the staggering building profiles which we see today.
Printing industry has had major changes in technology, the evolution from manually operated machines in 1870 to automated ones in 1990s. Companies used a big 2 story machine which required a huge area. All the process from printing, writing, composing, packing and distribution used to take place in one building. But now these programs are spread around the region. New York times has office in Manhattan which only makes written content and is printed in its printing plant in Queens.
Comparing these historical making spaces we see changes in building footprints over time and how the production process is scattered around the region, due to scale of production or space requirements which ultimately lead to industrial shifts in the region over time.
